Toothpaste splatters and soap scum to mucky hair strands and general grime, your bathroom floors can quickly go from sparkling to suspect. While a quick mop might do for daily upkeep, deep cleaning your bathroom floors at least once a month is a must to stay on top of germs, bacteria, and mold. However, before you roll your sleeves and get to work, it’s important to note that not all bathroom tiles will benefit from the same cleaning products or techniques. We’ve put together a comprehensive cleaning guide addressing how to deep clean bathroom floors depending on material. Read along for practical tips from FreshSpace cleaning experts.
Cleaning Ceramic and Porcelain Tiles

- If your bathroom floors are made of ceramic or porcelain tiles, you can clean them naturally using a cleaning solution made of a few drops of liquid dish soap, distilled white vinegar (or lemon juice), in a bucket of water. Use a soft sponge or a non-abrasive brush to scrub the surface.
- To clean the grout around the tiles, mix two scoops of baking soda with a few drops of water to create an eco-friendly cleaning paste. Apply this paste between the bathroom tiles and leave for at least five minutes. Then, follow up by scrubbing any dark stains using an old toothbrush. However, exercise extra caution when cleaning old tile grout, as it can be very porous and crumble or get dislodged with rigorous scrubbing. Don’t worry if it happens to you. In fact, experts recommend regrouting your bathroom every six months to prevent water damage and extend the lifespan of your tiles.
- Rinse your bathroom floors and dry with a Swiffer, a rinse mop, or clean towels.

Cleaning Marble, Granite, and Natural Stone Bathroom Floors
Despite their versatility, you should never use bleach or white vinegar to clean any natural stone surface, including your bathroom tiles. Vinegar can dull or damage its wax polish, sealant, and other crystallized surface coatings. Instead, opt for a gentle cleaning product specifically formulated for natural stone floors and follow these steps.
- Sweep or vacuum all visible dirt on your bathroom floor.
- Mix half a cup of the cleaning solution in half a bucket of water (or follow the product instructions). Use a rinse mop to apply the solution to your bathroom floor.
- Spot clean stained grout or surfaces using a non-abrasive sponge or brush.
- Do a second pass. Mop your bathroom floors with the cleaning solution once more.
- Do not rinse. Allow the floor to air dry.
